Alecia L. Lawyer, Executive Director, Founder and Principal Oboist |
Alecia L. Lawyer is the Founder, Executive Director and Principal Oboist of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra. ROCO fulfills its mission, “creating personal relationships through the language of music” with its 40 dynamic, engaging and virtuosic professional musicians from around the nation and guest conductors from around the world. ROCO performances are broadcast regularly to a nationwide audience on Performance Today, and to Houston area audiences on KUHF 88.7FM.
Ms. Lawyer was recently a finalist for Texas Musician of the Year (along with Willie Nelson), and has received numerous awards, including the Gutsy Gal Award from Houston Woman Magazine, the Sigma Alpha Iota Musician of the Year, and the Outstanding Chamber Orchestra Founder from the Houston Chronicle. She is on the board of University of Houston Women’s Studies and the Advisory Boards for American Festival for the Arts and the Marthannie School. She is a member of the Rebirth of Classical Music National classical music think tank and a 2009 participant in the Aspen Seminar at the Aspen Institute, studying and debating the great works of Philosophy through the ages.

After receiving her Masters from Juilliard and her Bachelors from SMU, Alecia Lawyer’s career has ranged from recording for John Cage and soloing with Rostropovich to a contemporary chamber music recital at Carnegie Hall, live radio broadcasts in New York, and disc jockeying for KRTS-92.1FM, Houston, TX. Enjoying a year residency in France, she recorded with the Sorbonne Orchestra, performed recitals in Paris, and concertized with various orchestras and chamber groups in France and Germany. Ms. Lawyer currently performs as principal oboist of ROCO, solos with area orchestras and is also oboist with the chamber groups Musiqa and Aperio in Houston. Alecia and her husband Larry have two fantastic sons, Jacob, 11 and Zachary, 7.
